One of the most popular varieties of poker today is the classic 5-card poker. What is more, this variety of the game was the most played until Texas Hold’em poker came along. At that moment it became the most played option, leaving classic poker as the second alternative.
If we focus on classic 5-card poker, we realize that playing it is very simple. You just have to make the best possible hand after discarding. Of course, in this case there are no community cards.
Currently there are two main variants within this type of game. We can see the classic poker Before and Blinds. If you are wondering how many cards you play with, we can say that in both variants you play with five cards.
– Antes variant: this variant can be defined as the original way of playing five-card poker. This means that it is the most used option worldwide. If you want to learn how to play, this variant is the most recommended. The variant consists in the fact that each player has to pay X money before being able to receive the cards.
– Blind variant: this is a variant of the original option, i.e. the Before variant. It is quite similar to the rules of Texas Hold’em poker. In this case only the two players to the left of the button have to post the blind. And the rest of the players can call or raise if they see that their cards are good.
Playing 5 card poker is simple, but we are going to show you how to do it if you are curious to learn. First of all, you have to make it clear which game variant you are going to use. After choosing, it will be time for the players to pay their share in order to receive their cards. At that moment the dealer will deal the cards, always clockwise. Each player will be dealt five cards. After receiving all the cards, it is time to make the first round of bets. You can “check”, “call” or “raise” the current bet. Of course, if the cards are not good, you can fold to avoid putting money in the pot that you know you will not be able to get.
The next step is to make the discard round. This round can only be done by players who are still playing the game and you can change the cards you want. This means that the player can keep all the cards if he sees that they are good or change the number he wants. In the case of throwing away X number of cards, you will receive the same number from the deck. The original game is like this, although in some games it is common to put a maximum number of card changes to give more excitement to the game. The most common is to change a maximum of 3 cards.
After getting the new cards, it is time for the second round of betting to begin. Before placing the bets, it is usual to leave some time for each player to examine his cards and see which is the best option. As in the previous round, you can raise, call or fold.
Finally, when the betting round is over it is time for the showdown. This occurs if there are at least a couple of players playing, if there is only one player left, the pot will go to the player who is left alone. And it must be remembered that in this variant of poker you can also bluff to try to cheat the other players and take the pot without having to show your cards. To win a game you should not leave everything to chance, sometimes knowing how to play makes it possible to win a game even if the cards are not good.
If there are two or more players left at the table, then it is time to lay your cards on the table. Once the cards are shown, the player who has the best cards will be the winner and consequently the person who takes the pot on the table.
After the showdown is over, it will be time to pick up the cards to play a new hand of classic poker. It is important to remember that, if there is no professional dealer, what is usually done is to rotate. The change is always made to the left. The objective is that everyone has the same opportunities and to avoid the possible manipulation of the games by the same player.
As it happens with the Texas variant of poker, in classic poker it is important to master each and every one of the moves. For that reason, before competing with professional players, it is best to practice to get the hang of it. Don’t make the mistake of learning with money or you will lose a lot until you learn to play correctly.
When you are at the table, avoid getting distracted and focus on your cards. If you see your thoughts wander to something else, it is best to get up from the table and leave it for another day. Without full concentration you will not achieve your goals.
When evaluating the cards, always do it with a cool head. Do not let yourself be influenced by feelings or palpitations. Equally important is to have a “poker face”. If you are not able to control your expressions, you will be giving signals to the other players.
As with other card games, you always have to learn to study the situation of the day. By this I mean that if you notice that one day you are not doing well, the best thing to do is to stop and come back another day. You should never make the mistake of playing harder to try to quickly recover the money you have lost with previous games. The most common thing is that the losses are usually even higher. Of course, you should never play more than the money you had prepared for the playing session.
